INCREASES in wages for transport I workers have been agreed between the Transport and General Workers' Union and S.P.D., Ltd., and the iron, steel and non-ferrous scrap industry. The transport and warehouse staff of S.P.D., Ltd., will receive another 3s, per week, and transport workers in the iron industry an extra 5s.

Negotiations with the Road Haulage Executive have brought about an. adjustment of wages of workers in the Carter Paterson and Pickford's Joint Parcel Group operating in the Isle of Wight.

The smaller plate costs 2s. 6d. and the larger 10s. 6d. Copies can be obtained from the Federation.

RADIO CUTS WASTE OF TAXI MILEAGE

ANEW Morris Oxford taxicab, with Marconi radio -` communication equipment has been put into service in London. It is estimated that 50 per cent, of waste mileage will be cut out, as when disengaged the vehicle cart quickly be directed to fares in its immediate vicinity.

A special feature of the installation is that the driver can use his radio without taking his eyes off the road or removing his hands from the steering wheel to pick up a loose microphone. The microphone isfixed at the top of. the windscreen and is controlled by a switch on the dashboard. The transmitter-receiver is fitted under the driver's seat and the loudspeaker is mounted in the dashboard.'

HANDBOOK FOR N.W. OPERATORS

A SUPPLEMENT to "Notices and rx Proceedings," giving valuable information for passenger transport operators, has been published by the North Western Licensing Authority.

Contents include a description of traffic areas, names and addresses of operators And a list of routes authoriied for the operation of 8-ft.-wide vehicles. Standard conditions attached to road service licences and excursion and tour fares are also published. The booklet runs to 287 pages.

LICENSING AUTHORITY ORDERS HIGHER PAY

AS a result of action by the Transport and General Workers' Union, the South Eastern Licensing Authority has ruled that Mr. M. J. Waveli, proprietor of the Enterprise Bus Service, Newport, Isle of Wight. must pay wages and grant conditions not less favourable than those awarded to drivers and conductors on a Group 1 undertaking. This means that Mr. Wavell is brought on a par with the Southern Vectis Omnibus Co., Ltd.

BOMBAY CUTS REFUSECOLLECTION COSTS LPOMBAY. is to mechanize its refusecollection system by employing 265 lorries, 24 Scammell mechanical horses and 150 trailers: Each day 24 mechanical horses will be used with 126 semi-trailers, each tractorbeing run with six semi-trailers per eight-hour shift. Two shifts per day will be worked. Other units will be used for refuse disposal.

By using articulated units, only 252 loaders need be employed, as against 429 at present.This will result in an annual saving of over 2,000,000 rupees.

EXTRA PAY ON DECEMBER 27

COMPANY and municipal bus undertakings are recommended to pay dn:vers and conductors at the rate of time-and-a-half for work done on December 27, which is a Bank Holiday. No holiday in lieu will be granted to employees who work on that day.

EXHIBITION OF FINISHES
