An Essex Station Laid Out For Efficient land Rapid Work QNE of the essential features ot servicing commercial vehicles and their equipment is that all work should be done with the least possible loss of running time, coupled, of course, with good quality of workmanship. Recently•H.S. Electrical Services, Ltd., Uppark Drive, Horns Road, Ilford, Essex, has organized a service in connection with automobile electrical apparatus and fuel-injection equipmeM-, which covers not only the district in which the company is situated, but the Eastern Counties, the Dock area, and North and East London. Actually, its activities are not restricted merely to these districts, but the location of the premises and that of its new depot at Cherry Hinton Road, Cambridge, makes it particularly well placed for the zones in question.

There are two main aspects of specialized service Work. One is the availability of trained and experienced per sonnet, and the other is the existence of equipment which is required for precise and rapid work to the exacting standards of to-day. Under the direction of Mr. F. H. Smith, who was for many years manager of an official Lucas service depot, is a number of experts in the maintenance of both electrical and fuel-injection apparatus.

An unusually large stock of spares is held for Lucas and Smith electrical equipment, and there is a battery service section, with charging plant, steam equipment for softening the sealing compound' around the battery-cell tops, and a lead-burning installation.

One of the main items in the electrical section is a Crypton apparatus for testing all items of the modern elec trical installations from 6 volts to 24 volts. It will handle dynamos, magnetos, starters, etc., and the speeds can be regulated up to 4,000 r.p.m. Couplings of various types allow a wide range of sizes of unit to be connected up for test, and all makes can be dealt with. Automatic timing devices can be tested for accuracy of functioning, and readings may be taken of starter torque.

A most important branch of the service activity is that in connection with oil-engine fuel pumps, atomizers and fuel-supply pumps. One shop includes a Hartridge test bench, on which can be checked the relative outputs of the pump elements, the injection timing, governor functioning and working of the fuel-feed pump. Atomizers. are tested for injection pressure and pressure maintenance. .

In the stores is a large stock of C.A.V.-Bosch parts, so that not only is the work facilitated at the station, but vehicle users can, in a few moments, obtain new or recon ditioned components necessary to effect rapid repairs at their own depots. The stock even extends to complete pump bodies as used on . practically all makes, including Gardner engines. A feature of unit-repair work is that the user is supplied with a card showing not only test results before and after attention, hut a list of the replacement parts and the reasons for their use.

For those who may not be able to send components to the depots of the undertaking, collection' and delivery can he made at any hour by H.S. vans, That the facilities offered are appreciated by important vehicle opera tors over a Wide area was proved by a study of the labels attached to parts in the various shops and by the names -painted on the vehicles drawn up outside the premises -'which were being attended to at the time of our visit.
