In connection with the proposals to borrow £53,000 for the provision of more buses, Manchester Corporation's transport department reports that the additional vehicles are required for the development of the department, due, in particular, to the running of more double-deck buses in place of singledeckers, and to the expansion of the system. It is recommended that 30 52seaters be purchased and it is suggested that 15 of the bodies should be constructed at the works in Hyde Road.

Tilling's Tender for Camberwell Refuse Contract Accepted.

After having considered the matter for some time, the works committee of Camberwell Borough Council recently decided that the existing refuse-collection system, employing horsed vehicles, was uneconomic and unhygienic, and the committee was definitely of the opinion that mechanical vehicles would overcome these faults and meet the council's requirements.

Consequently, tenders were invited for the supply of motor collectors and drivers, and Thomas Tilling, Ltd., A. Pannell, Ltd., and A. Pearman, Ltd., were asked to submit vehicles for inspection, the types including Dennis, Thornycroft, S. Freighter and Garner.

It was then aided to ask Thomas Tilling, Ltd., to supply a vehicle and driver on trial for a month, and the company submitted a Dennis 10 cubicyd. vehicle to the test, this being carried out in four districts of the borough. Pour loaders, in addition to the driver, were engaged upon the work.

The minimum weight of the loads carried was 2 tons 01 cwt., whilst the maximum was 3 tons 141 cwt., the bulk weight depending chiefly on the locality. For instance, from the Dulwich area, 474 dustbins were cleared on a certain day, giving a total weight of 8 tons Th cwt., whilst on another day 483 bins were cleared from the Peckham Rye district, the total weight being 12 tons 41 cwt., resulting in an increase of 8 tons 161 cwt. for approximately the same number of bins.

During the past financial year the cost of house-refuse collection by horsed transport was 10s. 711 per ton, whilst the Dennis vehicle on trial effected the work at a cost of 8s. 8d. per ton. It has, therefore, been decided that Thomas Tilling, Ltd., should be awarded the contract for five years, and the company has agreed to supply a special type of body at the price originally quoted.

This body will have four roller shutters on each side, with a loading line 4 ft. 7 ins. from ground level. When loaded to the top of the rave rail, the capacity will be 8 cubic yds., and 10 cubic yds. when loaded above that point. For end loading, there will be a movable plate, and the capacity when the vehicle is loaded to the top of this plate will be 12 cubic yds. and.15 cubic yds. above that point.

Horses Displaced by Motors: A . Prediction.

That within another 10 years the horse will have practically disappeared from the county, except for special purposes, is suggested by a report which the local taxation licences committee presented to Devon County Council at yesterday's meeting.

The number of drivers' licences issued has increased during the past 12 years from 12,068 to 44,301. From 1925 to 1932, private motorcars rose in number from 8,735 to 19,576, whilst goods vehicles increased from 2,575 to 4,676. There has however, been a decline in the number of tractors and agricultural engines. In 1925, 55 tractors were recorded, but last year the number was 26.
