Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A return recently issued by the Ministry of Transport shows that the earnber of motor vehicles registered for the first time under the Roads Act, 1920, daring the month of October, 1932, was 20,434, as compared with 18,292 in the corresponding mouth of 1931. This year's figure includes 3,869 goods vehicles and 210 hackney vehicles, the comparable returns for the previous year being 4,650 and 381. respectively. Although it will be Seen that the commercial-vehicle figures have' fallen, the registration of private cars increased from 10,018 to 18,338, accounting almost wholly for the increase in total registrations.

British Buses for Spain.

The Madrid tramways organization has placed an order with the Associated Equipment Co., Ltd., for four A.E.C. Regent chassis, which will be equipped with Park Royal 56-Seater luxury-type double-deck bodies. Three of the chassis will be equipped with the company's 120 h.p. petrol engine and the other with a 130 h.p. high-speed oil engine of the type now used in a number of London bases. The order for these vehicles was obtained through the Marques de Sales, the A.E.C. agent in Spain.

Bail Transport as Contract Condition.

The French State' Railway. authorities are now taking steps towards insisting that the railways shall be used for goods transport. In a contract recently given out by the authorities for 20 tons of copper wire, it was stipulated that the material would be accepted only if delivered by rail.

They are reported also to have issued a notice to the effect that supplies must be delivered by rail, unless the distance be less than 30 kiloms. (18i A Paper on Welding.

A meeting of the Institution of 'Welding Engineers will be held at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Storey's Gate, St. James's Park, London, S.W.1, on Wednesday, December 21, at 7.45 p.m., when Mr. A. G. Walker will read a Taper entitled, "The Essentials of Good Welding." The paper will be followed by a discussion.

Railway Speeding Up to Meet Road Competition.

A considerably accelerated railway goods service will be available all over Europe if a proposal put forward by the International Chamber of Commerce be 'adopted when the Berne Con

vention on the international carriage of goods, passengers and luggage, comes up for revision in October next year.

At present, the legal time limit allowed for shipment by rail is a day for dispatch and a day for every 250 kiloms. of distance carried. Under the new service, the maximum delay would be half a day for dispatch and half a day for every 300 kiloms. It is imagined that the introduction of such a service would greatly help the railways in meeting competition from road transport.

Few Irish Imports..

Four commercial vehicles were imported into the Irish Free State during October last, bringing up the total imports for the first 10 months of the current year to 566 vehicles, of an estimated value of 1110,553, as cons treated with 1,072 (f176,580), in the corresponding period of last year.

Tender Date for Trolley-buses Extended.

In our issue dated November 4 we published a paragra.ph intimating that the Christchurch (New Zealand) Tramway Board was inviting tenders for the supply of four six-wheeled trolley-bus chassis to carry 89-seater bodies. The final day for receiving tenders in Christchurch has now been postponed for a fortnight, and they must now reach the chairman of the Board by Saturday, December 3L
