Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Roman Oyarzun, Commercial Attache to the Spanish Embassy SPAIN has about 23 million inhabitants, and, although it is not supposed to be a very rich country, the development of motor vehicles during the past 15 years has been very remarkable.

Spain has many more motor vehicles in proportion to population than, for instance, Italy, although Italy has a very important motor industry and Spain has practically none: Hispano Suiza, the famous make of car, has a factory near Barcelona, hut the production, both in pleasure and commercial vehicles, is very limited.

, Most of the commercial vehicles used in Spain come from the 'U.S.A.; there are also many from France and Italy, and a few from Germany and Great Britain.

British vehicles were not popular in Spain until very recent times, but lately, owing to the improvement in the models and to the more favour: able rate of exchange, there are more and nibre British private cars going into the Spanish market ; it is, nevertheless, a fact that one sees

c56 very few commercial vehicles of British manufacture on the Spanish roads, but you see quite a number of British cars, especially in the north of Spain.

A Great Opportunity.

I think that there is a great opportunity, at this moment, for the British commercial-vehicle, manufacturers to introduce themselves in the Spanish market in competition with other countries: the duties are not high and are practically the same for every country : they are paid ore weight and are not ad valorem, so that they .vary according to the weight of the vehicle.

The American, French and Italian firms have very powerful selling organizations in Spain, and that helps them enormously in their efforts to conquer that market; on the other hand, there is not one wellknown British organization dealing in motor vehicles, although there are many local agents.

There is a wrong idea in this country about the Spanish climate. Most people in Great Britain think that all Spain has a hot climate, also that we have few mountains; the truth is that we have many, too many, mountains with very steep, long gradients, and, although it is hot or mild in the south of Spain all the: year round, and hot in summer in the centre—Castilla—it is very cold in winter in the north and not too hot during the summer. The main roads are perfect.

Motor vehicles must be well constructed for climbing mountains-this is absolutely essential for the Spanish market.

In conclusion, I would say that, in my opinion, there is a big future in Spain for British manufacturers of all kinds of motor vehicle.
