• Truck drivers are facing huge hold-ups near the German-Austrian border following a weekend decision by two regional governments to close many roads to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes.
The Bavarian and Tyrolean authorities shut the routes because locals were complaining that too many lorries were using them after the collapse of a bridge on the Munich Innsbruck autoroute made that road impassable. The roads affected are the B309, the B17, the B307 and the B24. The ban lasts until 6 September. Vehicles which are empty, carrying perishable foodstuffs or local are excepted. European transport commissioner Karel van Miert, is talking with the regional authorities.
