• A group of Midland tipper operators, set up to fight for better rates from quarry companies, has plans to go national.
The North Midlands Hauliers Association, which was to meet on Tuesday (14 August) to decide a constitution, could change its name to the National Hauliers Association, says a leading member.
Already 420-strong, with members from as far away as Cambridgeshire and Leicester shire, the association claims to have 100% membership among hauliers working for quarries such as Tilcon in Derbyshire.
Although a spokesman admits that because operators are private businesses they cannot strike, he says that its spread of membership gives it considerable strength when negotiating with the quarries.
The association was due to meet Transport Minister Patrick McLoughlin, MP for West Derbyshire, on Tuesday.
