Freight distribution by water within the European land mass is proving a success for Rhine Ro-Ro, which provides three United Kingdom-Rotterdam ferry services with a direct link with Southern Germany.
The company has two sailings a week from Rotterdam to Mannheim and Mainz and back, following the commissioning last year of a second ro-ro vessel. Both vessels have a capacity of 40 trailers and with the recent addition of two ro-ro pushbarges capacity has been increased on each sailing to 72 trailers or equivalent.
Rhine Ro-Ro Service's sailings call at the Rotterdam berths of Tor Line, North Sea Ferries and Townsend Thoresen. The direct transhipment into the inland ro-ro vessels gives an advantage over piggyback traffic, as the rail terminal is some distance outside the Rotterdam port area requiring an extra journey and extra Customs formalities.
