M A survey of inter-city hauls Over 100km to and from manufacturers in South Africa shows that 43% goes by rail, 39% by public road carriers, 11% by private road carriers and the rest by air or coastal shipping. The same data considered on a tonne-kilometre basis gives rail over the 50% mark.
In the survey of operators, it was found that, of all movements by road, only 33 % require permits. The remaining movements of goods were either within exempted areas or the goods themselves were exempted in the terms of the Road Transportation Act. The survey showed how the permit system inhibits vehicle use — the best being on long hauls, origin to destination type operations and local deliveries. Truck & Bus, May edition.
