• Guernseybus, the independent Trafalgar Leisureowned local bus operator on Guernsey, has had its plan to slash its winter services on the Island approved by the States government.
It made a substantial loss last year and had warned that it would need either a subsidy or a winter service reduction to maintain its operation. Another option was for the government to take over the bus operation itself. Now the network will be reduced to the busiest essential routes in the winter when the operator's vehicle requirement will drop from around 100 to 40 vehicles.
The decline in the use of buses in Guernsey has been blamed on high car ownership and cheap self-drive rates.
This year Guernseybus managing director Barrie Spears reports the operation is looking healthier and moving back into profit.
