RMA survey due soon

a From the protracted battle over regrrooved tyres comes news of a soon-to-be-released survey carried out by the Retread Manufacturers' Association, believed to show that a high percentage of regrooved tyres, sampled from its members, were in contravention of Construction and 1:se regulation 27.5a, with ply or cord exposed by the recutting process.

As reported in CM last November, the RMA and Michelin have been involved in claims and counter-claims about the safety and economics of tyre regrooving. Michelin maintains the process, when carried out at its Stoke-onTrent plant, is safe, and economic.

'rhe RMA, although not against regrooving in principle, is opposed to indiscriminate regrooving which, it says, damages the carcass beyond economic repair, and is unsafe.
