• A number of revisions have been made to the Peugeot Talbot light commercial range. As predicted by CM, the GL version of the Peugeot 305 car-derived van now gets a bigger 1.6-litre petrol engine.
The 60kW (80hp) XU5 power unit is already used in the 305 saloon and comes with the BEI five-speed gearbox as standard — the first 305 petrol van to get a five-speed box. However, the standard 305 van retains the current 1,472cc 55kW (74hp) petrol engine. GL van models also gain a new door mirror system with both fully-adjustable from inside.
The 504 one-tonne pick-up now becomes available in a GL version with a five-speed gearbox and interior trim improvements. Both petrol and diesel 504 GL pick-ups will be offered. But Peugeot Talbot has still to decide whether to bring in a 4 x 4 version of the 504, converted by Dangel in France.
The company says it will have to sell sufficient vehicles in the UK to justify the cost of producing a right hand drive version. CM will shortly be appraising the 4 x 4 conversion and will give a full report later this year.
The front wheel-drive Talbot Express panel van gains an updated front grille and badging, and with the exception of certain minibus models, all Express versions now come with cloth trimmed seats.
The Talbot Express 1300 van now becomes the 1400 van with an increase in its gross weight. The petrol-engined 1400 van weighs in at 2,900kg, while the diesel van's gross weight becomes 3,000kg. Payload on both models is also increased by 100kg to 1,500kg. A 1500 Express chassis crew cab, with space for six persons, has also been added to the range. Seats are vinyltrimmed, and wheelbase and mechanical details are identical to the standard 1500 chassis cab.
The smallest 205 GL hatchback has also been improved with new body side mouldings, full wheel trims and passenger door pocket.
