WITH REFERENCE to the report in Commercial Motor on the bus evaluation being carried out by the Tayside Undertaking (August 2, p30), I would be grateful if you would publish this letter to clarify some of the views reached by Mr Millier in his article.
Analysis of driver response has not yet been undertaken on a comprehensive basis — initial reaction is, perhaps not surprisingly, varied. The opinions of the limited number of drivers Mr Millier spoke to could be counterbalanced by a different random selection.
As your correspondent writes, evaluation, using ohe bus of each type produces its own difficulties. It will, therefore, be necessary to obtain more experience of the vehicles before a final decision can be taken.
One of the deciding factors — in addition to those listed in the article — must, of course, be fuel consumption. An improve ment of one mile per gallon could save over 800 gallons per year per bus.
It is certainly far too soon to reach a conclusion, even by supposition, that Tayside will follow South Yorkshire in its final choice.
