Cry from the South

A plaintive wail this week from Bob South, transport manager of Aerosol Research Ltd, at Portsmouth. In his capacity as education officer for the Portsmouth centre of the IoTA, Bob — helped by his wife — had been burning the midnight oil sending out recruitment letters to young transport men in the areas inviting them, to register for evening classes leading to the Institute's graduateship and associateship examinations.
The courses start in four weeks time and from the 200 invitations Bob has received only two replies. "There's just no chance of the education department starting a course for two," said Bob, "and the great fear is that the same situation exists around the country."
Bob's inquiries to date indicate that it is lack of enthusiasm rather than cost which accounts for the one per cent return. Course fees are £5.50 for a 90-hour term for under 18s and £6 for over 18s, and for those who want to go to the 180-hour session it is £11.50. "It must be lack of enthusiasm; it certainly can't be the price at these rates," said Bob.
