New edition now available

THIS week, after some delay caused by production problems, Commercial Motor's 1974 Tables of Operating Costs are published — in familiar form but with some further improvements.

Not surprisingly, the new edition records some savage cost increases — and not only in fuel, which has itself risen by about 50 per cent, with a typical effect of increasing running costs by 20 per cent. Higher vehicle prices and higher interest rates mean that weekly interest payments per vehicle have risen by as much as 89 per cent.

The heart of the Tables is the set of eight groups of tabulated information which shows the detailed items of standing and running cost for a range of goods vehicles from 5 cwt payload to 32 tons gross, for representative psv and for fleet cars. These tables also show total operating cost and recommended charges on a time and a mileage basis.

Accompanying the tables are explanations of how prime costs have moved, how to establish a simple costing system, and how to use the tabular material to best effect. There are also some pages of reference material —eg a fuel cost table, and a guide to traffic area offices and organisations connected with road transport.

CM 1974 Tables of Operating Costs is obtainable by personal callers at the Trade Counter, Paris Garden, Stamford Street, London SE1, or by post as shown in the accompanying panel.
