A CLEAR pledge to back the bus has been made in a document published last week by the South Yorkshire County Council. The policy document called "Transport — the way ahead" — details how the council's £24m transport budget will be spent in 197576. The plan calls for improved bus services and a study of new public transport systems.
On a practical note the document records the inten tion of providing more bus priority measures. "Mass public transport is certainly safer than mass private transport and it is considered that any additional dangers created by bus lanes will be more than offset by the effect of bus lanes in encouraging the uses of public transport," it says.
A warning is given that unless the speed, convenience and comfort of journeys to work by bus can be improved in comparison with those by private cars, congestion can be expected to increase while bus usage declines.
Restrictions are likely to be introduced on lorry parking in residential streets and also on the loading and unloading in busy town centre streets.
Subsidies to keep bus fares down are also provided by the document as is the use of car parking restrictions to ease congestion.
