THE NORTH SEA oil boom has meant an increase of almost a 100 per cent in the Seaforth Maritime fleet. This Aberdeen-based contractor claims to be the only haulier involved in pipe deliveries. The company's latest two contracts, involving more than 30 vehicles between them, cover 70 miles of pipe laying.
One contract is for a pipeline of 50 miles between St Fergus and the Loch of Skene for Laing Pipeline Ltd.
The other contract, for the British Gas Corporation, will take drivers from St Fergus all the way through to Preston, with specially coated and pretested pipe.
The pipe is imported to Invergordon where it is coated, then transported by rail round to Peterhead, where it undergoes tests, and is then picked up by Seaforth Maritime, and delivered to sites along the 350 miles track between Aberdeen and Preston.
The pipe is used principally at river crossings, bridges and deep gulleys, and over the 350 miles there are approximately 22 miles where this pipe is required. The company is also supplying two 30-ton mobile cranes and 10 men.
