• On the two C-licensed vehicles operated by Stranton Waste and Salvage Co. Ltd., Hartlepool. five prohibitions had been served this year and three in 1967 and on Wednesday in Stockton it was called to a section 178 inquiry.
The Northern LA, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, pointed out that during a fleet inspection on April 22 his vehicle examiner had found 20 items in need of attention.
Mr. J. Chadforth, a director, said that the vehicle concerned had received a GV9 on October 31 last year and had been off the road, awaiting spares until January 12. The vehicle had then been cleared and he found it difficult to understand that so many faults could have developed in the ensuing three months. He did not feel it was in a dangerous condition. Mr. Hanlon asked if a vehicle with so many faults could not but be a danger to the public.
The examiner's report said there was no maintenance system nor records and the vehicles were kept in an open compound with no facilities for under-vehicle inspection.
Mr. Hanlon said he was reluctant to suspend a vehicle but he warned that if he found the vehicles were not being properly maintained the licence would be revoked and business would'have to be done on hired vehicles.
At the same inquiry Jeffrey Dixon Ltd., Bishop Middleham. was granted an application to add eight tippers to its 8-licence. Northern Land Securities Ltd. had formed Northern Land Contractors Ltd. to incorporate its activities in the area, said Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw for the applicant, and Dixons were a wholly owned subsidiary of the latter company, Northern Land Contractors had bought the business of Robert H. Mullen, Bedlington, together with certain contractors' plant and equipment and wished to continue operating the vehicles from that base.
