• Mr. Peter Walker, Shadow Minister of Transport, pledged that he would see the quantity licensing clause of the Transport Bill rescinded, when the Tory party returned to power. It was at the official opening of the new transport and engineering depot of A. S. Jones, the Liverpool-based bulk liquid haulier. that he made this promise.
Agreeing with Mr. Ron Jones, he said that he considered the effect of the quantity licensing clauses would be to place a burden on the industry and make for less efficient and more expensive transport.
After driving a 32-ton Atkinson through the official tape and declaring the depot open, Mr. Walker contacted the driver of a vehicle working in the Runcorn area over the company's radio link. He said later that he admired the effort and enterprise of Jones in setting up such a modern and well-equipped base. It would serve the company well, helping it to comply with the requirements of the Transport Bill.
The new depot was described and illustrated in CM, June 28, 1968.
