DESP1TE efforts by hauliers serving Covent Garden to keep their drivers working during the Otters' strike, the men were told this week that their employers were unable to carry on. This follows the drivers' ban on the carrying of goods between provincial ports and provincial markets.
A statement by the Road Haulage Association said that the drivers were given the statutory four days' notice three weeks ago, but were told that they could continue to work if they would be prepared to carry fruit and vegetables in the provinces. They had already refused to handle "black "produce.
"The drivers agreed to do this," said the statement. "They have, however, since reverted to their previous complete refusal. The hauliers are therefore completely unable to carry on their businesses and have informed the men's representatives' accordingly."
