High-speed

Portable Compressor

ECENTLY a demonstration was 1 N. given by the Hymatic Engineering Co., Ltd., of .Redditch, of its new highspeed portable compressor, which possesses several unusual features.

The compressor, which has a displacement of 10 cubic ft. per min. at 2,800 r.p.m., is direct-coupled to a two-stroke petrol engine of 125 c.c. capacity. The engine and compressor are built as a unit, with a common crankcase.

Some features of the engire are that it is of the flat-topped piston type, the magneto is mounted in thz flywheel, and the crankshaft is common to both the engine and compressor, with the cranks set at 180 degrees. The crankshaft is mounted on six bearings—three

This A.E.C. coach underwent rough handling in service with the American Rd Cross. When returned to London Transport it was repaired and put back on the Green Line routes. These two pictures illustrate the effect of its "face-lifting treatment.

As it was ne...cQsary to strip the coachwork completely and to start afresh, the opportunity was taken to improve the appearance of the coaches above the pre-war standaid. A new colour scheme was evolved, and it will be applied to other coaches when they, in their turn, enter the Chiswick works.

Pow effective has been the work carried out on these vehicles can be seen from the smarr appearance of the coach illustrated on the left.

ball and three roller—whilst the bigends of both connecting rods are of the roller-bearing type.

Engine lubrication is on the petrol] system, and, in the case of the compressor, there is a large-capacity sump supplying oil on the Splash principle.

The engine and compressor are cooled by a forced air-draught, the centrifugaltype fart being mounted on the engine flywheel. Air from the compressor is conducted to the weldless-steel-tube frame, which serves as an after-cooler.

This frame also embodies an oil and water trap, two drain cocks being pro , vided at the lowest points.

As the whole outfit weighs but 50 lb., it can readily be lifted about, the top frame-member being suitably upswept to form a handle.

We subjected the component parts of this outfit to a close inspection, and found that the workmanship throughout was of the highest possible standard.

Incidentally, the company has recently introduced a blow gun which is designed to produce the maximum j:t velocity from the available air pre...sure. From a pressure line of 100 lb. per sq. in. a stream speed of nearly 2,000 ft. per second is attained.
