FARES on Glasgow Corporation buses and tramcars are to be increased from Sunday, August 18. The new scales are estimated to add £250,000 to the annual revenue. The revision was sanctioned by the Ministry of Transport and the Regional Traffic Commissi3ner on the ground that the undertaking was working at a loss.
At one time it was expected that a deficiency of £500,000 would have to be borne on the operations of the past year, but the manager's report, presented to the transport committee, showed a decided improvement in the position. The deficit which accrued on the year was £232,000, as compared with one of £374,000 in the previous year.
This improvement was due in the main to higher revenue, which reached a record total of £4,736,000. The working expenses were also down by about £10,000. The wages bill of the department now comes to £3,167,000, which represents an addition of almost £1,000,000 to the employees' earnings from the war-time awards made by the Joint Industrial Council, MANSFIELDS' RESULTS
riA NET trading profit of £25,142 was made by Mansfields, Ltd., in the year ended March 31 last. The figure for 1945 was £21.954. The net profit amounted to £11,882 (£12,273 in 1945), to which was added £5,594 (£5,270 brought in from the previous year. After making a transfer to general reserve and paying dividends, a balance of £5.526 (£5,594) remained to be carried forward.
The company has acquired freehold properties at Haywards Heath. Worthing and Brighton, and a site at Lewes for extensions to that branch.
HIRING MUNICIPAL BUSES WARRINGTON coach operators are VV overcoming the.shortage of vehicles for private hire by hiring municipal buses which are not required for service during off-peak periods. The municipal transport committee has approved arrangements made with the local operators.
RIBBLE AGREEMENT TO END
SOUTHPORT Transport Committee has decided to end the present arrangement with Ribble Motor Serviccs, Ltd., for the carriage by that company of local passengers within the county borough of Southport. Application is to be made to the Ministry of Transport for the reimposition of prewar restrictions on the transport of local passengers.
TYNE TUNNEL TO GO AHEAD
PLANS are to be prepared for a tunnel under the Tyne from Jarrow to Howdon. The work will go ahead as soon as labour and materials become available. It is proposed to send experts to Antwerp to inspect a tunnel similar to the one proposed on Tyneside.
The Tyne Tunnel Bill has now received the Royal Assent.
