The following staff changes are announced by the Hay's Wharf Cartage Co., Ltd.: MR. D. H. Four's, assistant to the chief parcels manager, joint parcels services, has• become assistant chief parcels manager. MR. J. E. BEAUMONT, chief surveyor and estate manager of Pickfords, Ltd., retires on September 30 after 52 years service. MR. W. C. LESLIE-CARTER, chief SUrveyor and estate manager of Carter Paterson and Co., Ltd., is to be chief surveyor and estate manager of Hay's Whail Cartage Co., Ltd. (embracing Pickfords, Ltd., and Carter Paterson and Co., Ltd.), as from October I.

Several new appointments have been made by the North British Rubber Co., Ltd., Castle Mills, Edinburgh. M. C. SURSFIAM, previously manager of the north-eastern branch at Edinburgh, has become tyre sales production Co-ordinating superintendent. MR. W. CAMPBELL has taken charge of new enlarged premises for the north-eastern branch at 181-185, Morrison Street. Edinburgh. M. A. BRomay has been appointed manager in Manchester; in the Glasgow area, MR. J. McEi.Rov has succeeded Ms. J. W. &foam as manager. Mr. Begbie has retired after 43 years of continuous service with the company.

An unfortunate error occurred in giving, last week, the name of the official we interviewed at the Brighton offices of Southdown Motor Services, Ltd. it was actually Mr. A. E. Cannon whom we saw, and who shculd have been described as being as enthusiastic and energetic as ever. LEYLAND EXPORT ORDERS FOR JULY WORTH 000,000

gathered overseas orders for passenger and goods machines worth more than £500,000. One order alone, from the New South Wales Department of Road Transport, Australia, totals 145 passenger chassis for double-deck buses, in addition to the 90 vehicles recently put in hand at Leyland for that Department.

According to the latest available statistics, the Department at present operates rather more than 400 buses, so that it would appear that the new buses. when completed, will increase the present fleet by over 50 per cent.

Orders for a further 100 passenger vehicles, many with left-hand controls, have been received from various coun tries in South America. Heavy-duty goods machines have been specified for South Africa. They will be powered by the new Leyland 140 h.p. oil engine.

Over 50 chassis have been ordered for Europe.

EFFORT TO BREAK CLASS DISTINCTION FAILS

APROPOSAL that workmen's -fares on Halifax Corporation's motorbus services be available until 9 a.m. failed to secure adoption at the town council's meeting on August 7, after the town clerk (Mr. W. Usher) had drawn attention to agreements between the corporation, the railways and the Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co., Ltd.

Mr. Usher suggested that, having regard to these agreements, it would be desirable to have consultations before any fares revision was undertaken by the corporation. He advised that the corporation's passenger transport committee should submit a comprehensive report to the council after consultation with the other parties. '

In proposing the extension of workmen's fares from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., Councillor W. Higgins had urged that black-coated workers, who were now no better paid than factory employees, should have that advantage.
