AFEW days ago the Ministry of Transport issued a return based on an analysis of the causes of 1,500 fatal road accidents which occurred during the early part of the current year. The nature of the accidents analysed ig shown in the following table:—
918 on straight roads or open-road bends; 65i per cent. of the accidents occurred in built-up al.eas.
In all, 1,981 vehicles were involved in the accidents, including the following: 588. private cars; 479 vans, lorries, etc., 403 pedal cycles, 275 motorcycles, 175 public conveyances, and 41 horse-drawn vehicles.
The returns analysed relate to the deaths of 1,532 persons, of whom 857 (55.9 per cent.) were pedestrians. The sole or main causes of the 1,500 fatal accidents were attributed in 736 cases to pedestrians (613 of them in built-up areas), 376 to drivers of vehicles, and 239 to pedal cyclists. In the case of those attributed to drivers, excessive speed is given as the cause in 113 cases.
