• ZF will display Ecosplit 3, the latest version of its Ecosplit 16speed gearbox, at the IRTE Show in May. Two models are available; the 16S 151 and the 16S 221. Their torque ratings are 1,700Nm and 2,300Nm respectively, the same as the Ecosplit 2 models they replace.
Detail changes include a pressure diecast casing and integral tilutch housing to reduce weight: ZF claims a 65kg weight reduction for the 151 and an 85kg reduction for the 221. Noise 1ev
Is reduced through improved profiles on forward gears and fine pitch gearing in the range change. A revised shift mechanism in the range change is said to give faster changes.
The Ecosplit 3 range is compatible with the ZF integral aydrodynamic retarder. When ngaged, gearbox oil fills a rotor :avity; turbulence caused by the rotor provides the retarding torme. Excess heat is conducted away through an oil/water ;cider fitted into the engine :Doling system. Six levels of braking torque are available.
MAN is the first truck manuacturer to offer the retarder as an option: it will be available on :he F90 multi-wheelers and "active units.
