• Recent trends in vehicle design have given a boost to Ray Smith's Metroswop concept for the transfer of demount bodies from long-haul vehicles to 3.5tonne chassis-cabs for delivery in environmentally sensitive areas.
A growing acceptance of air suspensions on all sizes of vehicle allows closer matching of chassis heights, making transfer of the small swap bodies quicker and cheaper.
However, the full potential of edge-of-town distribution is constrained by the EC's 15.65m combined maximum body length for drawbar combinations: many operators say they need 16.2m.
