THE CITY of Milan is to take delivery of a specially built highcapacity demount truck for use in a refuse transfer scheme.
The vehicle has been designed to carry interchangeable side dump bodies, each with a heaped capacity of approximately 100cum (3,500cuft) from hoppers taking refuse discharged by normal road-going city collectors, to the tip.
The unit, built by CKG-Kaelble, of Germany, is of a similar pattern to that already supplied to a German municipality and has an unladen weight of 35 tonnes. It can carry 40 tonnes — body plus payload — and is of an all-wheel-drive three-axle layout powered by an air-cooled KHD 19-litre V-12 diesel engine developing 345kW (455bhp) at 2,500rev/min.
Transmission is by means of a modified ZFWSK 400 torque convertor with eight-speed 4-5 150 GPA gearbox and integral transfer box for the multi-axle drive. The oversize vehicle, 6.30m wide by 15m long, has hydrostatic steering to provide perfect offroad control and maximum safety over rutted surfaces.
At the loading point the interchangeable dump bodies are lifted on and off the carrier by means of static hydraulic hoist. The subframe on the carrier incorporates hydraulic gear for discharge to one side and has powered tipping and return movements.
Introduction of the novel method is claimed to provide considerable advantages as normal vehicles do not have to be driven over the unstable surfaces of large tipping sites.
