I THOUGHT a jiffy was either a short time or a padded envelope suitable for sending letter bombs to people one has gone off. It is, I find, also the name of a kit supplied by Indespension, of Bolton, to build a 1/2-ton vehicle based on BL Mini parts to compete with the small Japanese vans on which the UK lavished more than £15 million last year.
Stung by this waste of resources and lack of patriotism, Dennis Clegg, general manager of the Manpower Services Commission workshop at Rochdale, bought a Jiffy kit and put some unemployed teenagers to work to assemble it under the supervision of a skilled bodybuilder. The next trick is to export it to Japan.
