MAY 24 was once a day of homage to the holy British Empire when uncomprehending children in schools throughout the country waved flags and sang anthems with patriotic fervour. With Britain no longer a world power, May 24 will this year be ATS Pro-Am day and, although confined to Stoke Poges, it will be celebrated no less fervently by golfers from far and wide.
Prize money will total £12,500 and the proceeds from the event will go to Sportsmen Pledged to Aid Research into Crippling Diseases, which somehow becomes contorted into the acronym, SPARKS. The demand from amateurs to compete in what might be called a pram competition is such that this year three, instead of two, will partner each professional.
Incidentally, Western BRS and Dorado Welch Ltd, both of Bristol, are again sponsoring Eamonn Darcy, the professional golfer and Ryder Cup player, by providing him with another prestigious Opel Senator car to replace the one given to him in June, 1981. In the past his clinic at the Western BRS golf day has been of great assistance to competitors.
