Len Payne, managing director of British Road Services Ltd, has taken over the position of chairman of Mortons (BRS) Ltd from Norman Shortland who has resigned after seven years as chairman. Mr Shortland's reason for resigning is on the grounds of ill health but he is to continue in a part-time capacity as a director and marketing consultant with Cartransport (BRS) Ltd. Mr Shortland joined Mortons 37 years ago and was appointed to the board of directors in 1951. The company operates over 200.vehicles.

Keith Gordon Morris, 35. has joined the sales division department of Repcon Ltd's southern division, and John G. Black, 22, has been appointed north-west area sales representative. Mr Morris has been a sales manager with Hydralon Ltd, Southampton, and with the York Trailer Co Ltd, Mr Black has worked for Translode Unites Ltd in Liverpool as well as for Reed-Harris and for Frigoscandia (Transport) Ltd.

K. R. Dwyer, a member of the London division of the Industrial Transport Association and of the Association's national council, has been elected a Fellow of the ITA, and has also been promoted to a new job within the Wimpey Organization. Mr Dwyer is now transport manager of Wimpey Asphalt Ltd. His position as transport administrator in the central transport department of the parent company hasbeen filled by J. A. Curram.

H. T. Dutfield has been elected national president of the Transport Managers' Club: A. Darley is chairman, W. J. Irons secretary, and C. Starr treasurer.

Ian Appleyard, chairman and joint managing director of the Appleyard Group, has been elected president of the Motor Agents' Association.

G. Cave-Wood, managing director of CaveWood Transport, and Charles Oliver, of Beck and Pollitzer' have been elected vicechairmen of the RHA's International Group. The new chairman, who replaces Jim Finnis, is Malcolm V. Robson (see page 41).

J. A. Gray has been named a London-based area director in the Cummins Engine Co Ltd's parent organization and is responsible for all marketing operations in the UK, Continental Europe and Africa. Reporting to him will be marketing groups based at Cummins offices in London, Brussels, Nairobi and Johannesburg. Mr Gray continues as managing director of Cummins in Britain. Reporting to Mr Gray in London is J. B. Hunt who becomes general manager—sales and service, with total mar keting responsibility for the UK. D. W. Mansell, previously deputy managing director and director UK marketing relinquishes these duties to form a new operation in the UK known as Mainstern. This operation will market

computerized vehicle maintenance systems. Mr Mansell remains a director of CECL.

Harry Carter has been appointed northern branch manager of Rentco Nationwide Ltd; based at the company's new depot in Heywood. Lancashire, he is responsible for the administration and development of Rentco's service in the north-west area. Mr Carter has more than 10 years experience in the semi-trailer industry and joined Rentco„ Nationwide from Crane Fruehauf Trailers Ltd. Howard C. Whitehead has joined the company with particular responsibility for services in Yorkshire and the North East; he will be based at the Ossett depot. Previously, Mr Whitehead was with Boden Trailers Ltd for six years, and he joins Rentco after two years with Kennings Ltd of Sheffield as commercial vehicles representative. Arnold Morris has joined the company as vehicle inspector at Ossett.

OBITUARY

We record with regret the death of Charles Jonas Meeson.

Mr Meeson, 84, founded the Arlington Motor Company in Ponders End, London, in 1920, was chairman of the group until 1959, but had remained a director. He was a Freeman of the City of London.
