REFERRING to the danger to the freedom of C-licensees, Mr. Frederick Smith wrote in a letter to "The Financial Times" on April 8:—

" All the activities of the British Transport Commission ought to be concentrated on the one supreme object of making its own transport services thoroughly efficient—and in a technical sense they have a very long way to go before they achieve that object. If they have any hopes that road transport price-control is going to help them, they are going to be deceived unless, first of all, they so reorganize railway operating as to incorporate the road motor vehicle in place of their very expensive feeder services—slowmoving, poor loaded trains, involving excessively wasteful haulage . . .

"This would, in 'the shortest time, bring down the general level of operating costs to a fraction of those current, and enable the British Transport Coinmission to offer to the public a stable price structure so infinitely below the present as to remove any inducement to the use of the C licence, except for specialized traffic which the Commission would be better off without.'

The title of Lloyd Boards, Ltd., was changed to Bowaters Building Boards, Ltd., as from April 1.
