PRODUCTION 1,837 DOWN IN FEBRUARY PRODUCTION of commercial vehicles in February totalled 12,165 units, compared with 14,002 in January. Of February's output', 3,86,1 were vehicles under 15 cwt.; 6,261, 15 cwt. and under 6 tons; 582, 6 tons and over; 1,169 motorbuses and trolleybuses, and 292 battery-electrics.

The proportion of vehicles for export was much higher than during 1947, 5,698 having been manufactured for overseas, compared with 6,467 for the home market.

In the first two months of the year, 26,167 commercial vehicles were produced, of which 11,842 were for export and 14,324 for home service. Prodnctibn by classes was as follows:— Under 15 cwt., 8,605; 15 cwt. and under 6 tons, 13,569; 6 tons and over, 1,102; motor buses and trolleybuses, 2,322; battery-electrics, 569. These figures have been issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

DEADLOCK IN STRIKE

THE dispute in the vehicle-building industry continues. On Saturday last discussions took place between employers and union executives, but no satisfactory solution was reached. On Monday morning employers met workers' representatives again, inform

A joint meeting of the executive committees of the National Union of Vehicle Builders and the Amalgamated Society of Woodcutting Machinists is to be held in Manchester to-day (Friday) to consider the matter.

THE Scottish Road Passenger Trans' port Association's annual conference will be held at Athol! Palace Hotel, Pitlochry, from May 26-29. Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager of Glasgow Corporation's transport, will speak on "Chemistry and Transport."

B. G. TURNER APPOINTED R.H.A. CHAIRMAN

THE new chairman of the Road Haulage Association for 1948-49 is Mr. B. G. Turner, M.Inst.T., managing director of .Thomas Allen, Ltd., and chairman and managing director of the Victoria Motor Haulage Co., Ltd., and several other concerns.

Since the inception of the R.H.A., he has been national vice-chairman, also a member of the Council of the National Road Transport Federation. He is a member of the Road-Rail Central Conference, the Committee of Management of the British Road Federation, and a Council member of the Institute of Transport.

The vice-chairmen who will serve in the same period are Mr. Frank F. Fowler, Mr. John Strang, Mr. Hartley Wilkinson, and Mr. B. Winterbottom. Mr. Wilkinson is the prospective Conservative candidate for Sunderland, and Mr. Strang (now chairman of the Scottish Area) took a prominent part in the amalgamation of the seven constituent bodies making up the R.H.A.

WAGES PROPOSALS AND WHITE

AS an administrative measure, the Minister of Labour wishes to be informed, when asked to confirm wages proposals that, in their deliberations, wages councils and wages boards have taken the White Paper On incomes, costs and prices into full account. He requests that proposals should be accompanied by a-memorandum to this effect.

AEMBERS of the London and 1V1 Home Counties Area of the Traders' Road Transport Association have been asked to "keep a close watch" in their own localities on the effect of any proposals for controlling traffic. Concern is felt at the increasing volume of regulations restricting the movement of traffic, particularly in towns and villages.
