Brian Caffrey International thrives on being flexible. This is how the company meets customer demands such as just-in-time distribution.

"We can go to any destination at short notice and that is how we keep busy," says transport manager Mark Caffrey (pictured, with Bernard Caffrey) We try to be flexible — you have to keep up with the market as it is at the moment.

"Because of just-in-time and the way logistics is now, everything is last minute and you have to be last minute.'

Other customer services include tracking systems which can identify where a load is and monitor the temperatures in refrigerated trailers. Trailers have automatic locking to prevent pilfering or interference with a load; quality of equipment contributes to good customer service.

The 40 Volvos and Scanias are replaced every three or four years; they're maintained in-house. Trailers are a mix of refrigerated and curtainsiders. The quality of equipment is seen as a focus to attract and retain drivers.

Vie have good enough working conditions, all our equipment is good and the work is mostly clean and easy with lots of full loads. So we don't have any problems with dryers," says Caffrey.

Training involves sending a new driver out with an experienced driver so that they can learn company working practices and become familiar with shipping routes.

The company keeps abreast of changing working practices and legal requirements with the help of the IRHA; in the local community it funds a variety of charities and sporting activities.

Caffreys recently won a nationwide distribution contract with a local paper company.

This kind of expansion bodes well for the firm at a time when escalating costs are driving others out of business.
