Excitement is mounting throughout Ireland as the judges prepare to select winners from the 17 operators who battled through to reach the shortlist in the Irish Road Haulage Association Road Transport Awards 2005.

The awards, now in their seventh year, are in six categories. Last week we featured the nine finalists in the national categories; this week we profile the eight international operators who made it to the final furlong.

At the end of the judging one company will emerge as Haulier of the Year 2005, chosen from the national and international category winners. The presentations will take place at a black-tie dinner in Dublin's City West Hotel on 1 October. All the entrants must be current IRHA members. individuals who have contributed to the road transport industry will also be honoured, with two awards recognising special merit and IRHA council activity.

The awards were launched in 1999 and have previously been presented as part of the IRHA annual conference at Easter. This year's nominees will receive more publicity than ever as the event switches to its own evening.

Commercial Motor and its former Irish edition. Commercial Motor Ireland, have sponsored the awards since they began. The other sponsors are communications firm 02 and accountancy firm Dempsey Mullen. •
