Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Highways Agency has warned truck drivers to slow clown on motorway contraflows if conditions are difficult.

A Highways Agency spokesman says: "The speed limit is normally 50mph on a motorway contraflow, but we would advise drivers to drive more slowly if necessary." The warning comes after drivers expressed fears about safety on the M25 contraflow between J8 and J7 in Surrey (CM 4-10 August).

In the past few days there have been two fatal accidents involving trucks on contraflows elsewhere in the country:

17 Accident investigators are trying to find out whether a new contraflow system on the M6 northbound at J5 was a factor in a fatal truck crash on 31 August.

CI On 2 September four people were killed in the contraflow on the M74: a northbound truck is believed to have veered into southbound traffic near Larkhall, Strathclyde.
