For the most part, hauliers continue to use small stick-on decals giving their names, addresses and telephone numbers. Imagination is not usually the industry's stock-in-trade — but when a vehicle has been imaginatively designed with selfadhesives, the results can be visually stunning. The creative opportunities seem unlimited and where companies have decided to cover the whole of the vehicle with their design, the continuous nature of the livery can work extremely Well.

The best of the "big decals" approach this year came from the class 3 entrants. The judges were very taken with the Smiths Crisps entry, and the Silent Night vehicle with its big hippopotami which tied in well with the company's TV and poster advertising campaigns. The Lyons Tetley entry did a little more, with the self-adhesive element worked in to the overall livery more. This year's judges (a different set from the 1987 judges in the main), however, came to the same conclusion as had their predecessors: there was just nothing in the whole entry which matched the way in which KP Foods had used self-adhesive vinyls to their best.
