FOLLOWING closely on its recent sales success (CM September 1), Renault UK has extended its Trafic light commercial vehicle range with the addition of a high-roof version of the T1000 long wheelbase integral van and a new P1400 chassis cab.
Both are built at the Creil van plant near Paris. The 3.2m(126in) wheelbase steel-bodied high-roof van has an increased load volume of 7.8cum(278cuft), compared to the 6.3cum (225cuft) of the standard-roof models. 11000 high roof vans will be offered with either 48kW(63bhp) 1.6 litre petrol or 43kW (58bhp) 2.1 litre diesel engines. Both models have Renault's five-speed gearbox as standard.
The manufacturer quotes a payload of 1,115kg(21.9cwt) for the 2.36-tonne gvw petrol-engi ned 11000 high roof, while the slightly heavier 2.42-tonne gvw diesel variant has a payload of 1,100kg(21.6cwt). Both figures are without a driver. To make way for the new models, Renault's short wheelbase highroof T1000 will be discontinued.
Standard equipment on the front-wheel drive T1000 highroof Trafic now includes a laminated windscreen, dual passenger seat and a side loading door.
In common with its existing Trafic chassis cab range, the new P1400 has a 2.96m(116in) wheelbase and is only available in rear-wheel drive. P1400 chassis cab models will be fitted with Renault's own 58kW(80bhp) two litre petrol engine or the Sofim Italian-built 53kW(72bhp) diesel unit currently used in Renault's larger Master van range.
Both diesel and petrol variants of the P1400 have a payload/body allowance of 1,600kg(31.5cwt) without a driver.
Prices for the petrol and diesel-engined high-roof T1000 are £5,695 and £6,450, while the P1400 petrol and diesel-engined chassis cabs retail at £5,295 and £6,125 respectively. All prices exclude vat.
The Trafic van is now the fourth biggest seller in the UK 1.8 to 2.5-ton panel van market sector. It has an 11 per cent market share and Renault is predicting sales of more than 7,000 vans in 1984.
A three-speed automatic gearbox is expected to become available shortly on T1000 variants and, for 1985, modifications have been incorporated on Trafic vans, including the addition of brake-wear warning lights (also on the Master), 2x 45mm rear drum brakes on all 1200 versions (previously 2x42mm), extension of interior rear door locks and the option of head restraints.
