IN ADVICE ON TRANSPORT on page 53 of our issue of August 25, I referred to an accident on August 22 in which a road tanker exploded on a bridge at Martelange, Belgium, resulting in the deaths of nine people.
The British Oxygen Co. Ltd., meticulous as always, has investigated the explosion, and has asked me to point out that the tanker was not carrying liquid oxygen, as I was informed, but was loaded with 40,000 litres of liquid propylene.
BOC adds that the only incident known to it involving loss of life due to an oxygen tanker explosion was that of its tanker at Biddulph, Staffordshire, in August last year. This incident, was described in my article on August 25 in a Fire Protection Association report which I quoted.
The report underlined the deep planning and forethought devoted to the safety aspects of the transport of liquid oxygen. BOC's excellent reputation in this respect is, of course, world-acclaimed.
