Keywords : Ambulance

0 f you ever need an ambulance, be greatful it won't by like the horse-drawn bonecrusher pictured here. It was built by Marchant & Fletcher at its Paddington workshop in 1870; in those days the driver would have found his way by whale-oil lamps. They operated (no pun intended) out of Hackney Ambulance Station

until

1912. This one (number 13 in the Metropolitan Board's fleet) now leads a pampered existence at the London Ambulance Museum in Ilford, east London. Earlier this year it appeared at Ambex 98 and, together with its plastic horse, held its own alongside Daimler and Morris ambulances from the 1960s.

Anyone interested rn visiting the museum should phone Terry Spur on 0181 557 1767.
