apparently holding out against the toughening economic climate. Only one haulier failed in September in England and Scotland, compared with iwo 12 months earlier, according to figures released by accountants Deloitte & Touche.

There have been 28 failures in the sector in the past 12 months. But haulage customers—particularly those in the manufacturing, construction and the paper, printing and publishing sectors—are experiencing a high proportion of company failures. Manufacturing accounted for 30% of all business failures in September. Deloitte & Touche says the business climate is toughest in London and the South-East, where 50% of company failures occur.

But the firm warns against a "phantom" recession. Partner Nick Dorgan says: "While the nation's financial commentators continue to warn of impending recession there remains stability in the UK economy. We need to be careful not to talk ourselves into a recession."
