• The Government is being urged to privatise the roadbuilding responsibilities of the Department of Transport to slash the current 13 year development period for trunk roads by more than 50%.
In a newly published report the national Economic Development Office's Construction Industry Sector Group proposes that an agency, private sector concerns or local authorities should take over as clients for motorway or trunk road construction. They would have to consult with interested groups and the public before schemes were designed and executed.
If implemented, the proposal could cut the design and construction of major road schemes to less than six years.
The DOT would adopt a more strategic role, securing funding, promoting a 10-year transport plan, setting standards and commissioning research.
