• Volvo is abandoning plans to build its B6 rear-engined midibus at the former Steyr bus plant in Vienna following teething troubles with the chassis which was launched last October (CM 17-23 Oct 1991).
Left and right-hand-drive models are to be built at Volvo's truck plant in Irvine, Scotland. Operators will have to wait until March 1993 for production to start — chassis will be available for bodybuilders in April. Because of the delay Tayside-based Stagecoach Holdings has cancelled half its order for 200 B6 buses in favour of Volvo BI OMs.
Application problems with the Allison Telma installation on South Yorkshire Transport's B6 prototype have led to the Allison box and Telma electric retarder being replaced by a ZF gearbox with integral retarder. The Allison Telma combination is used successfully on the Dennis Dart.
