resist any moves for a 40tonne weight limit, unless the Government takes measures to "protect the local environment". The association — which comprises councillors from nonmetropolitan areas in England and Wales — reaffirmed its opposition at a meeting of its planning and transportation committee. The ADC says there have not been any significant improvements to roads, or independent research findings to justify a change in policy. The claim by the Freight Transport Association that 40-tonne lorries would cause less damage to the environment is backed by statistics which are "somewhat selective", claims the association.
