spread nationwide have prompted the Freight Transport Association to request a meeting with the Department of Transport.
The Tapwork Report, which was produced by the Government's Traffic and Parking Working Group in July, moots the idea that simplified procedures used by London borough councils for introducing traffic controls could be extended to the rest of England and Wales. The FTA may seek a meeting with the Tapwork Working Group too. "The major worry is the possibility of much more relaxed procedures, like those in London at the moment, being extended to the rest of the country," says FTA highways and traffic controller Don McIntyre.
The Greater London Council was able to implement its night and weekend ban for lorries over 16.5 tonnes without the public inquiry which is required elsewhere. The FTA warns: "What might be red tape for a local authority can be a very important safeguard for the road user."
