Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Bus and coach sales enjoyed a boost last month with registrations up by over 19%, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders — but PSV sales so far this year are still depressed and are currently running at 10% below last year's levels.

Up to the end of September some 1,636 PSVs were sold, compared with 1,833 during the same period last year.

Volvo reports a particularly good September, selling 21 vehicles: so far its 1987 PSV sales are almost 11% up on last year's figures. MCW has also increased its sales, helped by its Metrorider mini-bus range. During the first nine months of the year it sold 316 vehicles — up 100% on the same period last year.

Leyland Oaf's Oaf Bus division has also seen improved sales, up by over 21% so far this year. Management-owned Leyland Bus, however, is still being hit by the depressed public sector market. Its sales for the year to date are down by over 50%, to 358 vehicles.

The importer's share of the PSV market has also grown and currently stands at 40%, compared with 32% over the same period last year.
