DAIHATSU (UK) of Dover, which claims to have overcome the problems of fuel metering, combustion and engine weight inherent with small diesel engine design, is using this year's Motorfair for the UK launch of its one-litre diesel-engined Charade.
The transversely mounted ci engine is a liquid-cooled threecylinder, four-stroke ohc unit of 993cc (60.6cuin) with a 76/73mm (2.99/2.87in) bore and stroke. Maximum power output is 27kW (36bhp) at 4,600rpm and its torque peaks at 60Nm (44Ibft) at 3,50Orpm.
The Daihatsu CL engine with its air intake inertia-charging system uses Ricardo Comet swirl chambers and a Bosch VE fuel-injection pump. These features combine with Daihatsu's own injection nozzles to help it to achieve claimed figures under government tests of 58.85mpg for the urban cycle and 78.47mpg and 42.80mpg respectively for the 56mph and 75mph constant speed tests.
