There is a concern that some drivers do not seek help for sleep apnoea as they fear they will lose their jobs.
However, Freight Transport Association policy manager Ian Gallagher says employers must support drivers if they have a problem as the consequences of a driver falling asleep at the wheel can be tragic.
“As an industry, it is critical that we leave no stone unturned in reassuring drivers that sleep apnoea is treatable and does not automatically mean the loss of their licence or a long time off the road,” he says.
