Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Some 580 staff at Bee Line Buzz have voted to accept a cost-cutting package after being told they could all lose their jobs if they rejected it.

The Manchester-based firm is to close its Stockport depot in February, making about 100 drivers redundant. It warned that unless staff accepted a new business plan, the Manchester and Rochdale depots, which employ about 270 drivers, could also be closed.

The Manchester, Rochdale and Stockport depots have all been losing money for some time, says managing director Richard Bowler, and the Gulf crisis has exacerbated the problem — monthly fuel costs for the three depots have increased by 210,000.

Bowler will not say what the cost-cutting package will involve, except that it is aimed at reducing overheads.

BLB dares not impose a fares surcharge to compensate for the Gulf crisis because its competitor, Greater Manchester Buses, has declined to do so, despite recording its worst results to date in September, with a post-tax net loss of £5.83m (CM 6-12 September).

Bowler says the company will transfer as many staff as possible from Stockport to its other depots in Congleton, Ashton and Macclesfield.
