Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Parcels operator United Carriers is replacing its 219strong Leyland Daf fleet with Mercedes-Benz vehicles in a 29m deal.

United Carriers managing director Michael Howe says the Mercedes 1726 Series as the company's specifications for drawbar units more closely than Leyland Daf s 95 Series. "The specification of our drawbar combination narrowed the field considerably," he explains, "and the Mercedes also provides better engineering suitability."

So far 24 of the Mercedes vehicles have been delivered at a cost of Lim — a further 60 tractive units and 135 drawbar rigs will be delivered by mid1992. All the vehicles will be supplied by Arlington Motors of Northampton.

United Carriers was the subject of a management buy-out from Bunzl last year.

1=1 Leyland Daf recently decided to put 600 workers at its Leyland truck plant on a fourday week.

The Dutch-owned firm says it expects to make a "significant" loss in 1990 (CM 1-7 November).
