• Lichfield haulage company Rowe Freight was fined 22,600 by the town's magistrates after it admitted a series of drivers' hours and tachograph offences.

The company pleaded guilty to 21 offences of permitting drivers to exceed eight hours driving per day and exceed 121/2 hours duty, and one offence of failing to ensure a driver returned a tachograph chart within the required period.

Alan Bentley, defending, said the person whose task it had been to organise the operation so that the drivers complied with the law had failed in his duties and had been dismissed. He has been replaced by a computer which analysed the tachograph charts, producing a print-out so that the company is now quickly aware if a driver was transgressing.
